Basic Drawing

This chapter introduces basic 3D parts built mainly from 2D sketches. You will practise combining sketches on different faces to form a complete model, followed by several exercises.

1. Bracket

Bracket drawing

Step 1

  1. Press S to open the command search.
  2. Search for New Component and create a component.
Creating a component

Step 2

  1. Use New Sketch to create a 2D sketch on the XZ plane.
Creating a sketch on the XZ plane
  1. Press C and R to create circles and rectangles.

💡TIP

Press D to add dimensions.

Initial bracket sketch
  1. Apply 2D constraints to make the rectangle tangent and fully constrained, then draw the remaining geometry to the specified dimensions.
Constraining the sketchDimensioned bracket sketch
  1. Press E and extrude the profile by 32.5 mm. A symmetric extrusion is recommended because it simplifies work on the opposite face, although it is not essential.

Step 3

  1. Create a sketch on the right-hand face.
Sketch on the right face
  1. Draw a centreline and a circle to the specified dimensions.
  2. Press X to turn the centreline into construction geometry.
  3. Create the sloping sides in either of two ways:
    1. Draw one side and use Mirror; or
    2. Draw both sides approximately, then apply the Symmetry constraint.

  1. Press E, select the regions to remove and use To Object with the rear face as the extent.
Cutting to the rear face

Step 4

  1. Create a sketch on the top face.
Sketch on the top face
  1. Draw a centreline and press X to make it construction geometry.
  2. Draw two circles approximately.
  3. Apply Equal, Horizontal/Vertical and Symmetry constraints to the circles.

💡TIP

Alternatively, draw one circle and use Mirror.

  1. Add the remaining dimensions.

  1. Press E and cut both holes using To Object, as before.

Step 5

Press F for Fillet, select the three edges and apply a 2 mm radius.

2. Guide Block

Guide-block drawing

Step 1

  1. Press S, search for New Component and create a component.
Creating the guide-block component
  1. Search for Sketch and create a sketch on the XY plane.
  2. Search for Center Rectangle and draw a rectangle of any initial size from the origin.
Drawing a centre rectangle
  1. Press D and dimension the rectangle.
Dimensioned base rectangle
  1. Press E and extrude the rectangle to 5 mm.
Extruded base

Step 2

  1. Create a new sketch on top of the base.
Sketch on the top face
  1. Draw a slightly smaller centre rectangle.
Drawing the upper rectangle
  1. Extrude it by 20 mm.

Step 3

  1. Create a new sketch on the right-hand face.
Sketch on the side face
  1. Press R and draw a rectangle approximately.
  2. Use the Midpoint constraint to centre it on the edge.
  3. Press D and add its dimensions.
Centring and dimensioning the cut-out
  1. Press E and cut the central opening, using To Object with the left-hand face.

Step 4

  1. Create a new sketch on the front face.

  1. Draw the two diagonal corner lines approximately and use the Symmetry constraint to make them symmetrical.

Hints
  1. Ignore the fillets initially. Sketch the approximate side view, add the dimensions, and extrude it symmetrically.

    Initial side profile
  2. Ø20 THRU ALL ⌵24×82° specifies a 20 mm through-hole with a 24 mm, 82° countersink. Create it with the Hole command:

    • Press H or select Hole from the menu.
    • Position the hole 32 mm from the left vertical edge and 31 mm from the upper horizontal edge.
    • Set Hole Type to Countersink and the angle to 82°.
    • Set Hole Tap Type to Simple, since no thread is required.
    • Either drill-point option is acceptable because the hole passes through the part.
    Countersink-hole settings
  3. Finally:

    • Sketch the remaining holes and remove them with Extrude, or use the Hole command.
    • Use Chamfer on the bevelled corners.
    • Use Fillet on the rounded corners.
